Wasn't as idyllic as we hoped!
The house was very quaint & perfect size for us. Despite the good reviews on cleanliness though, we found it to be quite grubby when we arrived. Microwave was not cleaned & shelves were pretty sticky. We had some grime on the light switches, door knobs & edges of doors. It was making us feel grubby so we cleaned some things ourselves. Rodney mentioned we could call at any time but we just wanted to get on with our holiday without cleaners coming back to re-do the place & have to stay in to give them access, so it was easier to do it ourselves! The cleaner whilst cleaning the unit next door asked how things were going & we mentioned the issues & he said that workmen had been in recently & had left their marks behind hence the grimy patches.
I think it was a bad time for us to be there as the toilet was whiffy & the garden was part dug up for new drains. I booked the house based on the lovely reviews of the garden but no-one mentioned the large rusting shipping container parked right outside the bedroom & kitchen window! I’d say the house would benefit from a ceiling fan as it can get quite hot & there’s only one air con unit.
It was quite disappointing as this was our 30th wedding anniversary treat – it was advertised as budget so we knew it wouldn’t be 5 star but we were hoping for less problems. On a plus point the house is conveniently situated between various beaches, shopping areas, plenty of choices to eat out & 30 mins from Bridgetown or the North of the island.
(P.S. I’d recommend Catch 22 restaurant near Sunset Point for beautiful views & tasty food inc freshly spear-caught lion fish & pretty amazing rum punches!)
30 year wedding Anniversary
First off I'd like to say that is Azalea cottage was wonderful, the property is amazing. It had lime trees, banana tree, pomegranate trees, plus beautiful flowers all around the property. It really was picture perfect just as you see in the ad. Rodney our caretaker went above and beyond to make sure that we had all our needs met he even took us for a drive around the island and showed us some great local spots to eat. The beach was just a walkaway down the road there was even a little store run by a great lady named Brenda just a few houses down if you needed anything. De outback restaurant was two blocks over and our cottage was located in between Holetown and Speightstown.
The weather was wonderful every day with a few rainy times which was definitely welcome plus odd cloudy moment which also was definitely welcome because it was super hot.
We met many wonderful people who have been to the Barbados over and over again and I will tell you we would not hesitate to go back and stay at Azalea cottage again. If you're looking for a nice quiet area the west side is the place to go. Thank you Karine for letting us stay at your cottage and a special thank you to Rodney for looking after us so well you've definitely become a great friend and we look forward to seeing you in the future. Barbados can be expensive if you let it but look for local restaurants local wagons with great ladies selling food in the back on the side of the road because that is where you get the best food the best service and the best prices. Thank you Barbados for showing us a great time hopefully will see you next year and thank you Karine we had a lovely time in your cottage we enjoyed every moment
thank you for being our gusts, welcome anytime, Karin and Rodney
Beds are full size, not queen size. A/C is NOT included in the price. Enjoyed the stay though.
In general, we enjoyed the stay. The unit was clean and functional. Loved the front porch. Property manager was very nice and helpful. The beach down the street is lovely.
There were a couple of unwelcome surprises though.
The biggest negative was that the beds in both rooms were full size (76" x 53", I measured...). One of the primary reasons we rented this unit was because the listing clearly stated queen sized beds. Instead, we had to squeeze onto a full the entire vacation.
Another surprise: The A/C is NOT included in the price although the listing didn't mention that it was extra anywhere that I could see. When we arrived, we were told we'd have to pay extra. They ended up turning it on for us at no charge, but it wasn't a pleasant way to start the trip.
There are roosters everywhere (common in rural neighborhoods like this). They like to roost in a tree outside of one of the bedrooms. They made very loud rooster sounds all night and made sleeping difficult.
Also be aware that we found that the neighborhood to be a bit alarming at first (we are Americans). Don't get me wrong; it isn't a "bad" neighborhood or anything. It just took some getting used to. Some of the nearby houses were in really bad shape and there are alot of young men hanging around outside on porches and in the street. It turns out that they were friendly and helpful, although we were followed a couple of times. I wouldn't have felt comfortable walking around after sunset by myself as a woman.
We weren't bothered by the heat too much in the rooms without airconditioning. We had to close the bedroom windows due to the roosters, but it was still ok for us. Others might find it too hot though.
We managed just fine with no car. Instead, we rode the plentiful buses most places. Be aware that buses are sporadic on Sundays, and we ended up having to take taxis that day. Other days were no problem.
We didn't have issues with bugs at all. Not even mosquitoes (January trip).
We had a great trip overall, largely due to good company and beautiful beaches. Definitely do the cool runnings catamaran trip.
I am sorry to state the wrong size of beds. I am German and we do not have a difference between full size and queen size. I did not know it was that important. Different culture obviously. The neighbourhood is one of the safest in Barbados. On the South coast you cannot even sit in the garden since it is not safe, in my garden you can sit all night because of the neighbourhood and you are safe. AC in included now since I changed the price. It had always been stated in the listing, sorry you did not read it. I am so sorry that your life-style in the States is so different from the life-styles in Barbados and Germany, (very alike). New guests, if you want to experience authentic life in the Caribbean come and visit us, but don't expect American way of life. Sorry we do not have that on offer!
The cottage covered all of our needs adequately for myself and fiancee.
We will definitely be returning to this amazing island and would have no hesitation returning to azelea cottage. Shane&Kim...
Dear Shane and kin,
it was lovely to have you as guests. You will always be welcome, all the best Karin
We were welcomed by Ron, pleasant and friendly guy, during our stay, we found Ron to be an asset, endless supply of clean linen & towels!
Unfortunately, our stay was ruined by the unbelievable heat in this cottage!?We paid for air conditioning on booking via Homeaway..when I contacted owner, she said we had not paid for a/c?! I informed her we had & would not have booked the cottage without air con? We have been regular visitors to the island & always had a/c.
We had 3 fans on 24/7 , which helped a little, mosquito nets over beds gave little protection? We have never encountered so many insect bites?!The owner did nothing to help apart from send her boyfriend to check the cottage had been sprayed?
My Bajan son in law caught a guy at back of house, trying to break in. Policewere called & given statements.Again, owner was informed & did nothing?
No compensation or re-assurance was offered from owner, who became abrupt & rude?!
We definately would not have booked the cottage knowing what we know now!!
A veritable home away from home
Karin is the perfect host who attended to our every need and was a mine of information on local attractions and social scenery. The house was immaculate and is decorated with esprit and a sense for convenience. It's in the midst of a grown, quite diverse neighbourhood with a pictoresque restaurant (De Outback) close by. Bus stop and beautiful beach are conveniently close and Speightstown is not without merits (don't miss out on the Arlington House Museum).
